Amethyst Lapidary Slab

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz.  The use as a decorative stone dates back to 25,000 years ago in Neolithic Europe.  The ancient Greeks and Romans used it to make beads and jewelry and it was used to denote royalty and luxury.  Christian bishops wore it as an allegiance to Christ.  In Greek mythology, this crystal is thought to inhibit intoxication.  In Chinese Feng Shui, positioning amethyst in the wealth corner is thought to bring prosperity to the home.

Amethyst is considered a powerful healing stone associated with the crown chakra.  It is especially useful in clearing the mind and banishing negative thoughts, and as such is often used in meditation.  This crystal is thought to increase communication and bonding and when placed in a room can amplify the bonding of that room.  For example, in the living room, amethyst can increase family ties.

This purple gemstone is the birthstone of February.  It is associated with the Pisces sign and the Wind Element.
