Heliotrope Jasper

Heliotrope Jasper is a variety of chalcedony jasper with dense green from chlorite or amphibole and red inclusions of hematite and yellow goethtite.  Heliotrope is an ancient gemstone and was known first as sun stone.  Heliotrope has been used for 5000 years, dating back to Mesopotamia, where it was used to clean and detoxify blood.  Due to its coagulant effects, it has been worn as a talisman in war.  With Christianity, heliotrope was name blood stone and was considered to have formed from blood droplets on the Earth during the crucifixen of Christ.

Heliotrope comess from the greek words meaning sun turning.  It was believed that reflecting the sun’s rays with this stone with turn the sun’s reflection blood red and aid in circulation.  In addition, heliotrope is considered a stone of protection and is thought to command respect to the wearer.

Heliotrope is an old birthstone of March.
