Ohio Flint Gemstone

Ohio flint was designated the Ohio state gemstone in 1965.  Flint is not often thought of as a gemstone, but the variety of colors and patterns in Ohio flint make it a very sought after stone for jewelry and other lapidary uses.  The tradition of flint knapping with this flint is still carried on today.  It has been used for thousands of years for arrowheads, pipes and other products.  Tools and weapons of Ohio Flint are found throughout eastern North America, as far south as the Gulf of Mexico and as far west as the Rocky Mountains.

Ohio flint was featured in the October 2018 edition of Rock and Gem.  The colors are incredibly varied, with pink, orange, green and gray.  One of the most popular types has gray banding.

Flint is a variety of micro-crystalline quartz, much like jasper and agate.  As such, it is associated with the root chakra and is useful in grounding the spiritual and mental self.
