Pyrrhotite - Aegerine - Magnetite

Pyrrhotite is a rare variety of iron sulfide that forms a brassy colored metallic mineral. In this rock from the Ukraine, pyrrhotite is associated with black magnetite and green-black aegerine in an igneous rock type – norite, a rock similar to “black granite”, or gabbro.

Pyrrhotite comes from the Greek work “pyrrhos”, which means flame-colored. The norite rocks that contain pyrrhotite are typically found in the oceanic crust and are brought up onto land when the oceans close and part of the ocean crust is pushed up onto the continent.
