Bloodstone

Bloodstone is a variety of chalcedony jasper that is storied to have formed during the crucifixen of Christ as blood fell on the Earth.  The use of bloodstone, or heliotrope, dates back to antiquity, however – 5000 years ago to Mesopotamia.  Heliotrope – meaning sun turning – refers to the thought that reflecting the sun’s rays with this stone turned the sun’s reflection blood red.  Heliotrope is known to purify and heal the blood and organs as a detoxification element.  Ground as a powder and mixed with honey it has been used to cure tumors and hemmorages and to draw out snake venom.  Bloodstone is also worn to command respect and provide protection.

Heliotrope contains dense green chlorite or amphibole with red hematite and yellow goethtite is chalcedony.

Heliotrope is an old birthstone of March.
