Mary Ellen Jasper
Mary Ellen Jasper is actually a stromatolite fossil (colonial structures created by Cyanobacteria – commonly called blue-green algae – some of the oldest fossils on earth). It has swirls of hematite mixed into a bright red background. A very solid hard jasper, this rock formed more than two billion years ago in the area that is now the Mesabi Iron Range in Northern, Minnesota.
